Three Loon Sighting

I thought this was a neat shot of the loons last night. The kids were getting ready for bed when the loons showed up near our dock.

Leech Lake Bug Count 2013 version

On July 21st Leech Lake conducted its 2013 bug count at the boat ramp. This event  was originated six years ago by Valerie McCoy and she continues to spearhead this effort every year.

The Township provides a benthic technician to collect the bugs in buckets of mud from the lake bottom and then specifically identify the types of bugs that Leech Laker volunteers capture from petrie dishes. The types and volume of bugs indicate the health of the lake and taken over time indicate trends in the lake.

This year the Bracebridge Examiner was on hand and did a story that appears in this week's issue of the paper. The url of the story is below and if you click on it you should be able to read the article as it appears in the paper.

Action on Lorne Road

The subject of the deplorable condition was discussed at the recent Annual Meeting. Many had thoughts about what to do to get the Township to act and have the road repaired to an acceptable condition.

Greg Wolfe of 1064 Lakeshore Rd S. took the challenge to heart and contacted the Mayor of Bracebridge, Graydon Smith, to discuss the deplorable condition of Lorne Rd. As a result of the conversation Graydon Smith has agreed to visit Greg on July 26, 2013, at 4:00pm at his cottage, to discuss the road condition and the future.

Greg is encouraging the President, the chair of the road committee and the rest of the executive to join in this discussion at his cottage. Greg is also urging all cottagers with an interest in the improvement of Lorne Rd. to take in the discussion and show solidarity and a passionate desire to have Lorne Road brought to an acceptable standard.

Then the Technician will sample them in petri dishes & the fun begins. Collectors catch the “bugs” with tweezers or plastic pipettes. The variety & number are logged. Kids will get tickets for collecting & will be able to exchange them for prizes. We’ll supply snacks in the morning & lunch with drinks throughout the day.

Bear Sighting

The following is from Don Hill:

I saw a small black bear Monday morning, just the other side of the marsh past the hunt camp on Fraserburg Road.  Both of our dogs had a bad night Sunday, wandering around the house, noses up at the windows and doors and occasional barks.  I'm pretty sure it was a bear in the area but did not see any garbage destroyed on the North road on my way out in the morning.

Just a heads up for people coming up.
